Every year, lakhs of graduates across India apply for the SBI Clerk exam, officially the recruitment of Junior Associates (Customer Support & Sales) at the State Bank of India. SBI is India’s largest public sector bank, and the job brings a stable career, good pay and benefits, and a clear path to promotion. It is one of the most sought-after banking jobs in the country.
So many people apply, and the seats are limited, which makes the competition tough. The good news is that the exam rewards smart, consistent preparation much more than raw talent. This guide covers what you need to know and how to prepare.
SBI Clerk Eligibility: Who Can Apply?
- Education: A graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students can usually apply, provided they finish their degree by the date SBI specifies.
- Age: Generally 20 to 28 years. SBI relaxes the upper age limit for SC/ST, OBC, PwBD, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories.
- Local language: You must be able to read, write, speak and understand the official language of the state you apply for.
📌 Tip: Eligibility rules, vacancies and dates change slightly every year. Always check the latest official notification on sbi.co.in/careers before you apply.
SBI Clerk Selection Process
Selection happens in three stages:
- Preliminary Examination (qualifying only)
- Main Examination (decides the final merit)
- Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT)
SBI Clerk Prelims Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 min |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 min |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 min |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 min |
SBI Clerk Mains Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General / Financial Awareness | 50 | 50 | 35 min |
| General English | 40 | 40 | 35 min |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 50 | 50 | 45 min |
| Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude | 50 | 60 | 45 min |
| Total | 190 | 200 | 2 hr 40 min |
Negative marking: Each wrong answer costs ¼ of the marks for that question. Guessing blindly can hurt your score badly.
Each section has its own fixed time limit, so you cannot carry spare time from one section to another. Speed in every section matters.
SBI Clerk Syllabus and Section-Wise Preparation Strategy
1. Reasoning Ability
Key topics: Puzzles and seating arrangements, syllogism, inequalities, blood relations, direction sense, coding-decoding, order and ranking, input-output, data sufficiency.
- In both Prelims and Mains, puzzles and seating arrangements make up the biggest share of marks. Solve at least 5–10 puzzles every day.
- Shorter topics like inequality, syllogism and coding are quick marks. Practise them for speed.
- In Mains, Computer Aptitude comes in this section. Revise the basics: MS Office, the internet, networking, shortcuts and computer history.
2. Quantitative Aptitude / Numerical Ability
Key topics: Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation (DI), percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, time and work, speed–distance–time, averages, mixtures.
- Learn tables up to 30, squares up to 50 and cubes up to 25. They speed up your calculations a lot.
- Simplification, number series and quadratic equations are the most scoring areas in Prelims.
- In Mains, DI carries a lot of weight. Practise pie charts, bar graphs, tables and caselets regularly.
3. English Language
Key topics: Reading comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, sentence improvement, para jumbles, fillers, word usage.
- Read an English newspaper editorial every day. It builds your reading speed and vocabulary.
- Revise the basic grammar rules: subject–verb agreement, tenses, prepositions and articles.
- Do at least two reading comprehension passages a day.
4. General / Financial Awareness (Mains only)
Key topics: Current affairs (the last 6 months), banking and financial awareness, RBI policies, government schemes, static GK.
- This section is the highest-scoring and least time-consuming part of Mains. Many toppers take the lead here.
- Read a monthly current affairs capsule, and make short notes on banking terms (repo rate, CRR, SLR, NPA, and so on).
- Revise static GK (capitals, currencies, national parks, headquarters of organisations) every week.
A Simple 3-Month SBI Clerk Study Plan
| Phase | Duration | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Month 1 | Learn the concepts in every subject, finish the basic topics, start daily reading |
| Practice | Month 2 | Topic-wise practice sets, sectional tests, start current affairs notes |
| Mock & Revise | Month 3 | Full-length mock tests (Prelims + Mains), error analysis, revision |
Daily routine (around 6 hours):
- 1.5 hrs: Reasoning (puzzles plus one other topic)
- 1.5 hrs: Quant (calculation practice plus one topic)
- 1 hr: English (editorial plus a reading comprehension or cloze test)
- 1 hr: Current affairs and banking awareness
- 1 hr: A mock test or sectional test, then analyse your mistakes
7 Mistakes SBI Clerk Aspirants Should Avoid
- Skipping mock tests. Mocks are where you learn time management and which questions to attempt.
- Ignoring negative marking. Accuracy is worth more than the number of questions you attempt.
- Using too many sources. Pick one good book per subject and finish it properly.
- Not analysing mistakes. A mock is useless if you don’t review where you went wrong.
- Leaving current affairs for the last month. It piles up fast, so do it daily.
- Skipping Computer Aptitude. It is easy marks in Mains.
- Losing consistency. Six focused hours a day beat twelve hours once a week.
